Spring flowers in Hintertux

Violet and blue, pink, yellow and white, the first signs of spring shine – gradually nature presents itself in new colors. When the snow slowly disappears, the days get longer again and the first warm rays of sunshine tickle our noses, nature around us awakens to new life.

Nature awakens in Hintertux

The first spring flowers poke their heads out of the earth. They bore their way through snow and undergrowth, reaching towards the sun. Each flower in itself is a true masterpiece of nature. An incredible variety of colors and different shapes of flowers and leaves delight every flower friend and attract the bees. In the forests, the sunlight still falls to the ground, because the deciduous trees do not yet have leaves. In Tux and Hintertux, this is the time of early bloomers. The first flowers also appear in the meadows and gardens in Hintertux.

Which spring flowers bloom in Hintertux?

Among the most well-known spring flowers are the snow rose, the snowdrop and the spring snowflake. Dandelions, daisies, coltsfoot, wood anemones and crocuses, wood violets, sea thrift and mezereon, hyacinth, pasqueflower and snow heath – they all appear as delicate little flowers, but defy the cold and often inhospitable weather conditions of the first weeks of spring. The snow heath, a heather plant, is particularly robust. These are the lilac-colored flower cushions on the mountain slopes, which can even withstand temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees. Other spring messengers impress with their fragrance, such as the hyacinth and the mezereon. The snowdrop, the spring knot flower and the primrose, also known as the key flower, have particularly graceful flower shapes. These three types of flowers have something else in common: they are protected by nature. They have become very rare in the wild, but their stock must be secured, as they are among the few plants that offer nectar to bees at this time of year.

Interesting facts

Despite the beauty of the spring flowers, a little caution is advised, as many of them are poisonous. Usually it is plant parts such as the bulb or the plant sap (e.g. in the dandelion), but sometimes even touching the flower (such as the mezereon) can lead to skin irritation. Children and animals should avoid contact with these plants, as they can cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. In earlier times, snow roses were even used as emetics and laxatives. The liverwort also had its place in natural medicine. It was dried and processed into medicine as a remedy for liver and bile problems. Here is another little tip that may prove helpful: if you have grabbed nettles, ribwort plantain helps to get rid of the itchy weals. This is how it’s done: rub a freshly picked leaf and place it on the affected area, this neutralizes the formic acid contained in the nettle.
