Trip to Tyrol’s largest mountain lake
Achensee Steam Cog Railway
The oldest cogwheel locomotives in the world, powered exclusively by steam, are more than 117 years old. Whistling locomotives, hissing and steaming valves, stamping pistons and hammering exhaust strokes guarantee an unforgettable steam train experience.
From Jenbach station, the Achensee can be reached with a gradient of 16% and a journey time of 45 minutes. It is the largest lake in Tyrol, with a direct connection to the Achensee shipping.
Romantic little castle
Tratzberg Castle
Tratzberg Castle was built in 1500 high above the Inn Valley between Jenbach and Stans and served Emperor Maximilian I and the Fuggers as a hunting lodge.
The late Gothic jewel was richly furnished in the Renaissance and has been the residence of the Counts of Enzenberg since 1848.
Well-preserved and fully furnished, Tratzberg Castle offers visitors a fascinating “audio play tour” (for children in a fairy tale version), which conveys the history of that time in an exciting way.
Natural spectacle
Krimml Waterfalls
The Krimml Waterfalls – the largest in Europe – are the fifth highest waterfalls in the world with their impressive drop height of 380 m over three stages. A hiking trail created by the Austrian Alpine Association (OeAV) leads directly to this breathtaking natural spectacle.
Experience the refreshing spray and the imposing power of the water amidst the dreamlike mountain scenery of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Observe the stars
Planetarium Schwaz
So close to the sky, in the planetarium in the heart of Schwaz. The first glimpse into space is unforgettable for many people – bizarre lunar landscapes, the cloud bands of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, glittering star clusters take our senses into other worlds.
Discover glowing gas nebulae or galaxies in the depths of space during our planetarium presentation.
Great bad weather program
Schwaz Silver Mine
A very special experience, which is suitable for a rainy day, is a visit to the Schwaz Silver Mine. It is the largest silver mine of the late Middle Ages, where around 10,000 miners mined silver and copper 500 years ago. On your 90-minute tour, you will gain insights into the hard life of the miners. You will be equipped with mining helmets and warm coats (of course in the color silver) and whiz with the small mining train into the interior of the mountain, where you will visit the caves and tunnels. Ideally combined with the planetarium, which is 100m away.
A nice “souvenir”
Candle World Brixlegg
In the Candle World Brixlegg you dive into a sea of light and colors. Admire handmade works of art, browse through the huge assortment of artfully decorated candles and discover lovely gift ideas as well as high-quality home accessories.
Particularly worth seeing is the impressive exhibition, which brings the traditional craft of candle making to life. An ideal excursion tip – also for days when the sun hides behind the mountains.
Town of glass
Rattenberg
Narrowly bordered by the river Inn and about 60 km from our house, the medieval town of Rattenberg nestles against the Schlossberg. The nearly 600 inhabitants of Rattenberg live in the carefully restored town houses – making it the smallest town in Austria. Rattenberg is also known as the “Glass Town”. There is everything that gives glass special beauty: glass engraved and painted, crystal glass, plates, cups, bowls, etc. You can also watch glassblowers at work.
Swarovski … approx. 68 km away
Crystal Worlds Wattens
Embedded in a mysterious park, a glittering fairytale landscape awaits you, inviting you to dream. In 14 underground chambers, the multimedia artist André Heller created a place of wonder in 1995 for the 100th anniversary of Swarovski.
The ever-changing crystal dress of the rooms reflects the joy of innovation and dynamism as the top maxim of the world’s leading manufacturer of precisely cut crystal.
