An incredibly delicious recipe from our Christmas kitchen:

Baked apple with marzipan – A piece of Zillertal tradition at the Berg Hotel Kössler

When the Tyrolean Alps are covered in a white blanket of snow and the days become noticeably shorter, a time full of comfort and warmth begins at the Berg Hotel Kössler in Hintertux. A traditional recipe that should not be missing in any pre-Christmas kitchen is the baked apple with marzipan. This sweet delicacy, enveloped in the scent of cinnamon and rum, transforms every afternoon into a small celebration.

A brief history of the baked apple

In the Zillertal, where winter arrives with snowflakes and biting cold, the baked apple has a long tradition. For generations, this sweet, warming treat has been prepared by families to sweeten the pre-Christmas season. The baked apple is considered a symbol of Tyrolean hospitality and is often served as a warm welcome to family and friends.

Health benefits of the baked apple

In addition to its delicious taste, the baked apple also offers numerous health benefits. Apples are rich in important nutrients such as vitamin C and fiber, which strengthen the immune system and promote digestion. They also contain natural antioxidants that can help prevent chronic diseases. Baking the apples makes the nutrients easier to digest, while cinnamon and raisins provide additional antioxidants and vitamins. Thus, the baked apple is not only a feast for the senses, but also a treat for the body.

Ingredients of the baked apple:

  • 4 tart apples (e.g. Boskop)
  • 100 g marzipan raw material
  • 2 tbsp soft butter
  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar
  • 1 tbsp honey and ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp raisins and 3 tbsp rum
  • 1 egg
  • 100 g roughly chopped almonds
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Preparation steps of the baked apple:

  • Prepare the raisins:
Start by soaking the raisins in rum. This mixture will later give the baked apples a special touch.
  • Prepare the apples:
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Wash the apples thoroughly and remove the core.
  • Mix the filling:
Mix the marzipan with butter and vanilla sugar, stir in the egg and then add honey, cinnamon, almonds and cornstarch.
  • Fill the apples:
Fill the mixture into the apples and put the lids back on.
  • Baking:
Bake the apples for about 25 minutes.
  • Serve the baked apples warm with delicious vanilla sauce and enjoy the Zillertal in a pre-Christmas atmosphere.
