Schedule of the festival in Hintertux
Oktoberfest – A festival of colors and sounds
The opening of the Oktoberfest takes place in a festive atmosphere on Friday evening at 7:30 PM. After the official opening ceremony, the festival tent invites everyone to dance the night away. With live music and DJ sounds, the mood stays lively well into the late evening hours.
Cattle drive – A tradition with style
The highlight of the weekend, the Almabtrieb, begins on Saturday at 10 AM with a charming farmers’ market. Local producers offer their fresh, high-quality products here – a paradise for lovers of regional cuisine. The cultural program is enriched at 12 PM by the folk dance group “Die jungen Höllnstoana” and the spectacular flag wavers. This is followed by the festive sounds of the “Kasermandl Duo” in the festival tent.
Musical entertainment and the decorating of the cows
At 1 PM, the Zillertaler Weisenbläser will captivate the audience. Meanwhile, up at the Bichlalm, the cows are traditionally decorated before they make their festive way down into the valley. You can expect the arrival of the magnificently adorned cows at the festival grounds around 2 PM. It is a truly picturesque sight that celebrates the safe return of the animals from the summer pastures.
Closing with dance and music
For those who want to end the day in style, the festival tent from 7 p.m. offers another stage for dance and music with performances by the “Sumpfkröten” and other musical guests. The evening leads from 11 p.m. into a lively party with DJs, who create a great atmosphere until the early hours of the morning.
The cattle drive and the Oktoberfest in Hintertux are more than just a celebration!
They are a tribute to the cultural heritage of Tyrol, a celebration of community and joy. An event that you must have experienced – in the heart of the Alps, surrounded by the majestic backdrop of the Hintertux Glacier. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this unique tradition and experience the hospitality of Hintertux.
The tradition of the cattle drive – A festival of gratitude and colors
The Almabtrieb is a time-honoured event that takes place in Hintertux every year on the last weekend of September. After a long summer on the lush alpine pastures in the mountains, the cows are driven back down into the valley to prepare them for the coming winter. But this descent is not just a move from one place to another. It is celebrated as a festive occasion that expresses gratitude, community, and the deep connection between people and animals.
“Decorating” the cows:
One of the most striking aspects of the cattle drive is the artistic decoration of the cows. They are adorned with flowers, bells and colorfully decorated headdresses. This jewelry not only has aesthetic significance, but is also a sign of gratitude to the animals that have provided milk and meat throughout the summer.
In many villages in Tyrol, the cattle drive is accompanied by festivals. The streets are filled with stalls offering regional delicacies, and there is music, dance and other cultural performances. It is a time of celebration, of coming together and reflecting on the traditions and values that shape the communities in Tyrol.
Custom behind the cattle drive:
The Tyrolean cattle drive is therefore more than just an agricultural process. It embodies the deep connection between people and their environment, between tradition and modernity, and between gratitude and celebration. It is an event that offers both locals and tourists an insight into the culture, history and heart of Tyrol.
